Critical stylistics is a branch of linguistic studies that examines the relationship between language, power, and ideology. Among the notable literary genres in this field is Monsha'at, i.e., epistolary prose. Letter writing was considered a civil service profession in the political and governmental systems of Iran from ancient and medieval times to the present day. Among the prominent Monsha'at writers of the Qajar era is Qa'em-Maqam Farahani, who served in civil and state affairs during the reign of Fath-Ali Shah and his crown prince, Abbas Mirza. His Monsha'at, which is divided into three sections—Sultaniyat, Divaniyat, and Ikhwaniyat—was written to various political and governmental figures in the world and the Qajar dynasty, as well as the author's personal relatives. The letters that the Shah and Crown Prince of Iran sent to the Russian Emperor to appease and apologize after the murder of Griboyedov were written by his pen and helped prevent another war. Fath-Ali Shah's letter was analyzed using qualitative and quantitative methods, and statistics were presented. It contains important political and ideological content in sub-layers such as codes, deictic markers, emotional charge, speech acts and principles of politeness, and syntax—that is, the type of sentences and verb forms—which, in addition to the author's artistic and eloquent pen in convincing the audience, indicate the political relations prevailing in the courts of the two countries; through their analysis, one can understand the power and political discourse dominant in the text.
