Abstract

Shafi’i Kadkani’s poems possess a distinctive rhetorical quality that reflects the poet’s mastery and deep attention to the eloquence of language. One of the rhetorical dimensions of his poetry lies at the level of words. At this level, the reader encounters numerous coordinative compound whose usage far exceeds that of standard language. Sometimes, the use of paronomasia within these coordinative phrases enhances the internal music of the text. At other times, the musicality of the words influences their meaning, making the discovery of the relationship between the coordinated elements particularly thought-provoking. Therefore, this study examines coordinative compounds in three poetry collections; A Mirror for Sounds, The Second Millennium of the Mountain Deer, and A Child Named Shādi, from a rhetorical perspective. The aim is to determine the frequency of coordinative compounds sharing common letters and to clarify their rhetorical functions in both expressive and semantic dimensions. This descriptive-analytical research gathered its data through library studies. The analysis of coordinative compounds in Kadkani’s poetry reveals that this contemporary poet, researcher and critic emphasizes the theory of “the magic of proximity.” He skillfully exploits the property of combining words with shared consonants – especially the initial consonants – so that beyond the mere proximity of some coordinative phrases, figurative imagery emerges alongside the musicality of the words. Moreover, the effort to harmonize and coordinate these words has occasionally led to the coinage of entirely new expressions.
