A Study of the structure, content and elements of guerilla poetry in the works of Ali Moosavi Garmārūdi and Siāvash Kasrāei

Abstract

The political and social upheavals since the time of constitutionalism caused changes in Persian poetry and literature. In this relation, mass protests, bloody repressions, and guerilla uprisings was reflected in the literature, and poetry took on the tone of commitment, resistance, and stability. Guerrilla poetry, due to its revolutionary thoughts and ideals, prioritizes content over form. This research seeks to investigate this specific type of contemporary literature and new poetry, in which the role of content is more than form, and new language functions are created, due to political conditions. Furthermore, in terms of content and audience, it has borne the ideological weight of a particular group of intellectuals and political activist. This library-based research employed systematic note-taking and a descriptive and analytical methodology to examine Persian poetry collections of the 1950s and 1960s, especially the works of Ali Moosavi Garmārūdi and Siāvash Kasrāei. As such, guerrilla poetry has been identified and its functions have been represented in a politically volatile and socially turbulent time. The results of the research show that the use of words related to war is one of the important elements of Garmārūdi's guerilla poetry. Words such as weapon, gun, sword, blood, and prison manifest threats and warnings to the enemies. Garmārūdi, influenced by religious and class culture, has also reflected ideological themes in his poetry. Considering himself as belonging to the suffering majority, Kasrāei always prioritizes dealing with the suffering of the masses and the necessity of struggle in all his collections. According to Kasrāei, the only way to liberate the Iranian nation is to unite the masses of people and support the heroes who sacrifice their lives for their country. He use a metaphoric and symbolic language to unravel the enemy of the nation through poetry.
